Ch. La Rose-Pourret, St. Emilion Grand Cru

The Warion family have owned the 8 hectare property for over a century, and these immaculate sandy, iron-rich vineyards lie in the shadow of the famous clock tower just outside the town walls. Merlot makes up 70% of the plantings, with Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Cab. Sauvignon, and vines average over 40 years of age. Yields are kept low, fermentation is temperature-controlled, followed by a year and a half oak maturation. Classic St. Emilion without the Grand Cru price tag.

Grand Vin de Glenelly, Glenelly Estate

The various grapes were aged separately for six months in French oak (1/3 new), then blended and aged a further six months in the same barrels. Showing beautifully at the moment; dark Syrah fruit on the nose, a hint of black pepper, then more Cabernet on the palate – sleek, savoury blackcurrant; hints of coffee and earth – with a great balance of ripe tannins and balanced acidity.

Ch. Poitevin`s gravel-based soils farmed with minimal intervention gives a Left Bank wine of great typicity, vinified with up-to-date techniques. More or less 50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, a pinch of Petit Verdot, with 14 months in barrel. A superb harvest in Bordeaux.
