29 January 2012
Hard to believe that January is almost gone but it has and this saturday’s show was the last of the first month of 2012. Cooking live on the show the legendary Ken Hom and making a welcome return – Bryn Williams of the multi award winning restaurant Odette’s. Choosing the wines this time was Susie Barrie. Special Guest, spice girl Emma Bunton faced her food heaven (pasta, and lobster)or hell (monkfish).
Cooking first Bryn cooked pan fried Salmon with curried mussels. Choosing wines today from Dad’s army’s home town of Thetford, Susie was torn between a sauvignon blanc and an Albarino for this very wine friendly dish – a gift to wine experts. She went for the Albarino – Taste the differnce Albarino from Sainsbury’s at £7.99 per bottle. Albarino is a fantastic seafood accompaniement with roasted lemon notes to work beautifully with the salmon and a hint of spice to compliment the curried mussels.
Next on the hobs Ken Hom prepared a Chinese new year favourite: Roast crispy pork belly with egg fried rice. Susie was again tempted by a rose but in the end preferred to go for a South African Ken Forrester 2011 Chenin Blanc.. With an apple like acidity this is a good match with pork and cuts through the fattiness of the dish. There’s also a bit of oak there to partner up with the pepper and five spice flavours in Ken dish.
Probably not surprisingly the votes fell on the food heaven side for Emma and James prepped - Lobster ravioli with lobster sauce. Wine match for it was: Macon Villages Blanc "Les Roches Blanches" 2010 Louis Jadot from Majestic at £7.99
