Nebbiolo is the grape associated with Barolo and Barbaresco wines from the Piedmont region of north western Italy. The variety is fairly high in tannins and can take quite a lot of maturing to balance those with it's other attributes. Noted in particular for it's perfume Nebbiolo also has a very long shelf life in the bottle with examples running to 40 years - a true survivor.
light red nebbiolo wines mature to reveal a range of floral fruit and even leathery flavours and scents. This is truffle country too so it's not surprising to find hints of this precious fungi in a mature nebbiolo.

Whether the name nebbiolo derives form the Italian word for noble of from the Italian word for fog - the grapes form a milky or foggy veil on their skins as they near ripeness and are also grown in volume in a region known for the dense white fog that often covers the vines - It's one of Italy's best red grapes. Rated by some wine experts as a close second to the tantalising pinot noir, nebbiolo is a fussy grape that requires expert and loving attention from dedictaed growers to bring out the best it's complicated nature.
Definitely most comfortable it's native land and in particular the small region around Barolo, the variety has nevertheless been cultivated with some success in New Zealand and some parts of the USA. It is a late ripening fruit and the maximum exposure to sunlight during cultivation is key to a successful harvest. For this reason it is crucial that it is planted accordingly - facing south and at a sufficient height to ensure that every bit of available sun is absorbed.
The grapes also need to be strictly managed as they are naturally inclined to grow leaves in profusion rather than fruit if left to their own devices.
Nebbiolo wines are drinkable and can still be very good young but it just keeps improving with age so if it's new to you it might be an idea to go for something with a few years on it's clock so to speak. The 2006 Nebbiolo D'alba 'mirine', Paolo Manzone on this page for example.
Attempts have been made to blend this variety with others due to it's overtly tannin structure but this has in fact been banned in production of Barolo and Barbaresco by Italy's wine industry governing body.
