Syrah is the grape in question with Shiraz having become the popular name in Australia and New Zealand and hence in recent years, with the huge popularity of well known brands like Jacob's Creek, the name many are more familiar with.
Syrah has been used in wine making in the south of France since time immemorial and is believed to have it's origins there. There is however a very famous Iranian wine called Shirazi produced in the ancient city Shiraz and some historians would argue that this points to Shiraz being the original name for the variety...Whatever the truth may be this is a wildly popular style of wine for fans of big reds which have a full body and high alcohol content.
The now extremely popular shiraz wines are deep purple, full bodied, peppery wines that mature well and are produced in a great many wine regions worldwide.
