Semillon Wine

Semillon grapes are used to produce both sweet and dry white wines. The green skinned grapes are comparitively easy to cultivate and produce very high yields which ripen early. Although once possibly amongst the most widely grown of grape varieties it has become less important in the production of dry wines but remains a stalwart variety in Sauternes.

This is becoming a popular choice for producers in South Africa where it is known also as wyndruif or wine grape. It is known also for it's presense in some excellent soft dry wines particularly in Australia and New Zealand. Semillon wines can be a little on the "grassy" side when young but they have good ageing potential.

Top tip - Semillon is pronounced Seh-mee-yhon and not as it sounds. According to an article in the telgraph recently this is one of the top wine faux pas commited by us brits when ordering this wine - so be warned !

The Semillon grape has a little hidden fact in it's favour too. It can be affected in a very positive way by the "noble rot" which is a fungal growth that in the right circumstances can create semillon grape juices that produce wonderful, concentrated sweet wines. If however the grapes fall victim to the rot when unripe the results are disastrous - timing is everything !
