You can also search for wines on windeday.co.uk by searching wine grape variety. In this category you will find all of the best-known wines listed by wine gaspe variety. If you simply hover your mouse over the grape variety section a pop out list will appear which features the key varieties so you can go straight to your chosen style.

We start with Cabernet Franc, which is one of the most used of grape varieties across the world. Grown predominantly for blending with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varietals where it has been used to produce the classic Bordeaux style since the end of the 18th Century. As a consequence of this grapes popularity you will discover a large number of wines from all of our featured retailers within this variety.

We move on to Cabernet Sauvignon, a heavier style than Cabernet Franc and probably the most widely known style from the red grape variety.

You can also choose from, Grenache grown widely in Spain, the south of France and California where the hot dry conditions suit this variety best.

Select also from examples of Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Semillon, Tempranillo and Shiraz. With the huge strides forward that have been made in wine production over the centuries and the continuing experimentation and search for perfection, blending varieties is commonplace.

Each variety has it's particular characteristics and strengths as well as weaknesses so winemakers routinely blend varieties to comtrast and compliment each other in the finished wine. As well as single variety wines we carry many great examples of mixed variety wines on these pages. Some you will be familiar with - Merlot for example is very often blended with Cabernet sauvignon to add spice and character to a grape which can at times be a little dull.

Other blends are perhaps a little more unusual but well worth trying. What about a blend of tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon to produce a soft but full bodied wine full of fruit combining elegance and richness. Whether it's red, white or rose you'll find some very special single varietal and mixed varietal wines here

For a hugely entertaining look at our final two varieties: Merlot and Pinot Noir we would highly recommend the movie Sideways – a wine based road movie. Laugh and learn!
