A grape of many names, the Grenache variety is another hugely popular and widely planted grapes in the world of wine production. A late ripening variety, the grape prefers the hot dry climates found in Spain - where it is known as Garnacha, the South of France and some of the Californian wine growing areas.
Grenache wines are typified by a reasonably high alchol content and by a soft character with flavours of berry and spice. It can have a fairly insipid colour and flavour so is often blended with varieties such as Syrah or Tempranillo to add fullness. It is however the predominant grape used in Chateau-Neuf-du-Pape so has a pretty noble heritage.
