Viognier Wine

Thanks for visiting our pages for uber fashionable Viognier wines. Viognier is the only grape permitted in Condrieu a French white wine made in the Rhone valley. This is another ancient white wine grape variety - origins unknown - although as with a number of varieties the romans have been associated with it's introduction to the Rhone valley region.

Viognier is another of the tricky varieties to grow. It is difficult to predict the yields from a given harvest and if the grape is not allowed to ripen fully, the resulting wines can be lacklustre in aroma and flavour. Get it right however as with the examples on our pages and the resulting wines are deep yellow, beautifully perfumed and relatively high in alcohol.

Only in pretty recent years have we seen viognier wines appear on the supermarket shelves. Despite wines made from this varoety being both food friendly and great on their own they have always played a second fiddle to chardonnay in terms of popular taste. With more of the grape being planted now however it has gone through a bit of a rennaisance amongst growers and consumers and is now easy to find both off and online.  Like all wines whoes star has faded slightly but that have been rediscovered - the price tends to be very good too so it's a good time to be finding this variety for yourself if you aren't familiar with it so far.

Although traditionally quite exclusive to France, viognier grapes are now increasingly grown elsewhere. Countries including Italy, Greece, South Africa and Japan are gaining a good reputation for wines produced from viognier. Good examples too hail from California where in keeping with current trends in that region they tend towards high alcohol levels. Look also to Australia for some great viognier wines.

This variety is often blended as it lends it's trademark floral perfumes to other varieties such as marsanne and grenache blanc. Other good blends well worth trying are chardonnay viognier or savignon blanc viognier wines. You'll find some fabulous examples of those amongst the 75 wines featured on these pages.

Prices for Viognier wines on our pages start at £5.59 and depending on the number of bottles ordered and the specific retailer, deilivery can be free (check the retailers terms and conditions when ordering please)
