Corkscrews

Ever since someone somewhere came up with the idea of closing a wine bottle with a tightly fitting cork mankind has (sometimes literally) wrestled with the question of how to get them back out ! The humblest device for removing corks is the basic cork screw which consists of a simple steell screw attached to a bar of some kind. Since brute strength is often required with this type and some accidents both comical and tragic have resulted with this model, it has somewhat fallen from favour other than as a decorative object. If you have ever pulled a shoulder muscle you'll want to avoid ever doing so again ! I bought one in Germany recently as the bar was made from a piece of varnished Riesling vine. It looks great but I doubt I'll ever use it !

Moving on from the simple corkscrew we have the ever popular screwpull corkscrew. This takes the muscle work out of shifting a stubborn cork - remember that they also swell once in the bottle neck so can sometimes be very tough to remove.  The screwpull uses the age-old leverage principle which uses mechanics to draw the cork out against the bottle neck - simple and easy! We also have loads of versions of the excellent waiter's corkscrew style openers. These are a simple one-armed version of the screwpull idea but also incorporate a small blade for quickly and neatly removing the foil around the cork before removing the cork.
